June 29, 2004 Rival's dad rips Telfair BY JULIAN GARCIA, DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Sebastian Telfair would not have been selected in the first round of last week's NBA draft had he been from anywhere other than New York City, the father of a rival point guard said yesterday.
"Take him out of New York and put him in North Carolina or somewhere like that, or put him in a gym where nobody knows his name, and he's just another kid," Darius Washington Sr., whose son was one of Telfair's biggest rivals, told the Daily News yesterday.

Ready for the next step For Darius Washington, one of 12 on our All-Southern Team, the NBA will have to wait -- at least for now. By Buddy Collings | Sentinel Staff Writer Posted May 23, 2004
A cautious Darius Washington? That's a new one.
The brash former Edgewater High standout never hesitated to push the ball and push the issue in high school. He was always in fast-break mode, always looking for a coast-to-coast opportunity to attack the rack. But when it comes to the headlong dive by high schoolers into the June 24 NBA draft pool, Washington is still on deck -- willing to see whether anybody hits bottom before he jumps.

State Champs! Washington's 29 propel Eagles to title
By Buddy Collings | Sentinel Staff Writer Posted March 14, 2004
LAKELAND -- A month ago, amid talk of All-America honors and all-star games, Darius Washington's father said his son had conquered high school basketball.
He was a just a little bit premature with his parental pride.
Darius Jr. finally stepped to the top of the podium Saturday night, taking a bow in front of roaring Edgewater High fans as principal Mike Blasewitz draped a gold medallion around his neck in a state championship celebration at The Lakeland Center.
Washington, Edgewater's electrifying senior guard, scored 29 points and was a unanimous MVP pick as the Eagles culminated a 30-2 season with a 72-51 victory over South Miami (21-9) in a Class 6A state final seen by 4,687 -- the biggest crowd of the four-day event.

Washington quiets critics by Jerry Brewer March 14, 2004
LAKELAND -- No more doubts, please. Leave Darius Washington alone. Alone at the top. His prolific high school basketball career is over now, and make no mistake about his legacy.
He will not go down as a brash, me-oriented gunner who exported style and failed to import substance. He will go down as a famously talented teenager who, despite unfair scrutiny, exited as a winner and, more importantly, a teammate.

When asked whether he has been to Chicago, Darius Washington needed only a short response."Oh, yeah,'' he said. "I was there for LeBron.'' The 6-1 point guard from Edgewater High School in Orlando, Fla., was at the United Center for the EA Sports Roundball Classic last year.

There's an old saying, “whatever doesn't break you will make you stronger”. Whoever made that statement definitely had Orlando Edgewater’s Darius Washington in mind.
Over the past three years, no athlete in Florida has been scrutinized more than the 6'1 All-American shooting guard from Edgewater High School.
