Grizzlies Looking for Depth in Free Agent Camp
May 11, 2009
While everybody is watching players like Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and Carmelo Anthony steal the show in the NBA Playoffs..it's the OTHER player on those teams who help make it possible for them to do what they do..
That's why the Memphis Grizzlies are beating the Free Agent Bushes right now..looking to upgrade depth for next season.
Before the draft process even gets underway, the Memphis Grizzlies are hoping to fill in a few gaps.
21 players are in town, working out as part of a the team's free agent mini camp,
An opportunity for the players and a chance for the Grizzlies to find a diamond in the rough.
Grizzlies Assistant Coach Barry Hecker says: "We're looking for guys who can score, but more importantly guys who can come off the bench, fit in and help the Grizzlies win."
The group consists of D-League players, Former NBA players, and players who have spent most of their time oversees.
Guys like former Memphis Tiger Darius Washington, who's literally been to Russia and back, including a brief stint with the San Antonio Spurs.
D-Wash is well aware of his chances. "Coming in, they have Rudy Gay, Mike Conley. You just have to find out where you fit in."
Former Grizzly Michael Dickerson is also hoping to get back in the league, after being forced to retire at age 26 with a sports hernia back in 2003.
"I just love to play." says Dickerson. "If I can't play in Memphis, I"ll go back to Seattle and play with the kids. I can dominate them and that's more fun."
Former UNC-Charlotte forward Rodney White was a lottery pick in the 2001 draft, but has played the last few years overseas.
He believes his experience and maturity could make him an invaluable asset to a team like Memphis.
White wants badly to get back in the League.
"I just wanna show that I can score, I've improved my defense. Have the chance to show the management that I can still play and that I've improved as a person too."
The Grizzlies mini camp runs through Wednesday.
